When high school seniors are deciding to pursue their higher education, they may not think of attending community college, but community college shouldn’t be over looked.  There are many advantages to attending a community college instead of a university. Students are realizing community college is just like a 4 year school but the cost is a lot less. Each year more students are attending universities, but the universities cost continues to grow. As the costs for these schools continue to rise students are beginning to attend community college.

Senior, Iris Villegas will be attending James Madison University, Iris received a full ride scholarship to the university. Although Iris is attending a university, she stated all the benefits when a student attends a community college. Attending community college right after a student graduates helps the student mature and still get a full college experience. When a student graduates high school they don’t know what to expect when they begin college. Attending community college will help the student learn more about the “college life” while staying at home with family. A student can be at the campus during the day living the college life, then at the end of the day they can easily go back home with out any worries while not having to pay thousands for a dorm room like at universities.

Senior, Katerine Canales will be attending Northern Virginia Community College. Katerine said she is proud of her self for attending college and study her dream job on becoming a nurse. Katerine said she will be attending Nova because she loves being in small class rooms and having a close relationship with her teachers. Being in a class room with 300+ students won’t help students concentrate and actually learn the topic in a classroom. Katerine also stated that she is not ready to leave her house yet and is happy that she can study during the day then go home to her family once her classes are finished.

For some people, the two-year college system means to a career; for others it’s getting ready for a 4-year university. Completing your general education requirements at community college has several advantages over a four-year university. Community college can be a perfect choice for students who wish to save money and reduce their dependence on student loans. A student success in community college depends on the type of experience they want. Overall wither a student chooses community college or university it’s good that their at least getting their education and receiving a diploma.
