Freedom softball and “Player of the Year” don’t usually go together.

This year, however, the Eagles can celebrate one of their own because 5-foot senior Tyanna Roberts is the first softball player in school history to be honored with this title.

Freedom Athletic Director Steven Bryson says about Roberts, “This is a great accomplishment for Tyanna and a first for Freedom High School.” “Tyanna has worked hard over the last four years to improve her craft and it has paid off,” Bryson said.

She’s not only the Cardinal District Player of the Year, but she also was named to the Cardinal District First Team 3rd Base.  Bryson said,  “…the decision to name her Player of the Year was a unanimous one by the other coaches in the district.”  Roberts has shined all season and has plans to attend the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on an athletic scholarship.  She’s been on the Freedom varsity team since her freshman year, and has played softball for eight years.

“I thank my parents for this accomplishment because without them I wouldn’t have been able to do it.” says Roberts.  A testament to her highly skilled level of play is the fact that the team only won two games this season.

Her other accolades include: 1st Team All-Conference, 2nd Team All-Region, and MVP for two years in a row.

“Tyanna is a true student-athlete. We are very proud of her and happy that she is a Freedom Eagle,” Bryson said.
