Freedom’s men’s lacrosse team had a great 2019 season even though a lot of games didn’t go our way. Yes, we did have a record of 1-11 but losing so much brought us together as a team and our chemistry grew more than ever. A lot of our players were first year players and actually played really well for it being their first time holding a stick. Usually when its your first year, especially in lacrosse, everything can be a blur because you have to learn how to cradle, pass, catch, shoot, and a lot of different skills regarding the game of lacrosse in such a short amount of time. I feel like all of our players who had to learn these new things did a great job and didn’t complain or make any excuses as to why they couldn’t do certain things on the field but instead, they worked hard every day to better whatever skills they were weak at.

We had five players get All-District honors which is amazing considering our record and what other schools would probably think of us. I (Yakub Nabie) got Honorable Mention along with Christopher “Sully” Sullivan. Mariano Ortiz and Abdul Sesay earned 2nd Team All- District. And Julian “JT” Edwards earned 1st Team All-District.

Attackmen, Christopher Sully is a senior and played a big role on the team. He had great stick skills and was a force to be reckoned with. His big stature helped him run through people and distribute the ball which is a big reason he earned Honorable Mention. He plans on going to Norfolk State University on a scholarship for Band.

Midfielder and Faceoff men, Abdul Sesay is a junior. He is a first year player and has natural skills when it comes to lacrosse. He did extremely well on faceoff and was the second best Faceoff guy in our district. He also lead the team with 13 goals which is AMAZING for a first year player.

Attackmen, Mariano Ortiz, is also a senior. Ortiz is one of our captains and leads the team with pride. He has been playing for three years and is probably the most polished player on the team. His IQ is so great that it feels like we have a second coach on the field. He also has amazing stick skills. Ortiz plans on going to Alderson Broadus University on a full scholarship for lacrosse.

Defender, Julian “JT” Edwards, is a sophomore. Julian is a great defender and has all the attributes a coach needs. He is fast, strong, quick and has great one on one defense. For JT to get First team as a sophomore is astonishing. JT is also only the third player to get First Team All District in Freedom history. He has the potential to be a GREAT lacrosse player one day.
